Responsibilities of Students

1. Students will identify themselves to the CSD, and, where required, provide appropriate documentation of their disabilities. In the case of learning disabilities, a psychoeducational assessment designating a specific learning disability is required.

2. Along with a Disability Counsellor, and based on their documentation, students will participate in the development of an Individual Student Plan (ISP) which will meet their academic needs.

3. Where appropriate, students will inform individual professors of their disabilities and academic accommodations required, by distributing the Individual Student Plan (ISP).

4. Students who are registered with the CSD and who want to write a test or exam in the CSD Test Room are responsible for picking up the test accommodation form, completing it with their professor, and bringing the top copy to the CSD at least seven days before the test date.

5. Students will try to advocate for themselves when addressing disability-related needs. Students may seek assistance from the CSD at any time.

6. Students with disabilities, like all students, will abide by departmental, school, and College policies and academic regulations (e.g., attend classes, submit assignments on time, and behave appropriately).

7. Students are responsible for checking information sent through the CSD Blackboard Account.

Important Information to Remember

Your Academic Advisor

Your Academic Advisor is one of your professors or coordinators. The role of the Academic Advisor is to assist you with issues around your academic courses. You should consult with your Advisor prior to making any changes in your timetable.

Overview of CSD services

The role of the CSD is to provide you with the academic accommodations and support you require due to your disability. The accommodations you can receive are based on the confidential documentation you provide to the CSD.

Roles and Responsibilities

The CSD follows a team approach that involves the student, professors, and a Disability Counsellor. This team is further supported by the Learning Strategists and the Assistive Technologists. You are the captain of this team, and are responsible for making your needs known to your Counsellor.

Individual Student Plan

Your Individual Student Plan (ISP) lists the accommodations that you are entitled to, and helps you notify your professors of these accommodations. You are responsible for providing your professors with a copy of the ISP and discussing your needs with them. If there are any concerns, they should be brought to the attention of your Counsellor at the beginning of the term. There is no obligation on the part of professors to accommodate a student with a disability if they have not been informed. You will require an updated ISP at the beginning of each semester.

Testing Accommodations

If you require accommodations for your tests and exams, and want to write the test in the CSD Test Room, it is YOUR responsibility to make the arrangements. You must submit the appropriate forms to the CSD at least seven days before your test date. Failure to provide the proper notice could result in you not being accommodated.
