What is an ISP?

Each semester, students will meet with their Counsellor to develop a confidential Individual Student Plan, also known as an ISP. The ISP is a letter that lets professors know that you are registered with the CSD and that specific accommodations are required while you are at school.

The accommodations listed on the ISP are based on specific disability-related academic needs. For example, a doctor or psychologist may recommend that a student receive extended time on exams, or that the student may need note-taking assistance. Students will talk about these needs with their counsellor during their appointment, and together they will develop an ISP.

The ISP is different from an Individual Education Plan or IEP that you may have had in high school, because now you are responsible for giving a copy of the ISP to your professors and discussing your needs. This is an excellent opportunity for you to meet your professors one-on-one and introduce yourself. Professors are not obligated to provide you with accommodations if they have not received an ISP. Another difference is that you will need to meet with your counsellor each semester to get an updated ISP, which is again distributed to your professors.
