Our Program

This one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program prepares graduates for a rewarding career in the field of human resources management. Human resources professionals are in demand across many industries, and drive people performance in organizations. Human resources professionals work with all other business areas in organizations to help improve employee productivity to achieve organizational goals and objectives. Graduates achieve this through strategies and best practices they learn in recruitment, selection, compensation, employee and labour relations, training and development.

The program is delivered over two levels in a variety of course formats including classroom, lab and online. Qualified students also complete an unpaid work placement at the end of the program, where students apply best practices in real world organizations. The curriculum covers all topics related to the profession of human resources, and focuses on building human resources knowledge needed to attract, select and retain the best employees. In addition, the program provides the foundational knowledge required to act as a strategic partner to any organization. Level 01 courses provide a background in finance and accounting, organizational behaviour, labour economics and employment law.

Graduates may find employment as a human resources generalist or business partner in many for profit and non-profit organizations, such as hi-tech, manufacturing and retail. Graduates may also find employment by specializing in occupational health and safety, recruitment and selection, training and development, industrial relations or compensation.

This program is part of Algonquin's mobile learning initiative. All students entering into the program are expected to have and use a laptop or mobile computing device that meets or exceeds the recommended hardware requirements as designated by the program. Students in mobile learning programs will use their devices to enhance their learning experience, obtain and work with course materials, participate in collaborative and mlearning environments and become skilled, confident users of the technologies used within an educational environment and workplace. Graduates may obtain employment in a variety of for profit and non-profit organizations, such as hi-tech, manufacturing and retail. Graduates within these organizations may pursue careers as human resources assistant,
generalist or business partner.

Courses

Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with online learning activities. Upon registration, each full-time student is provided an Algonquin email account which is used to communicate important information about program or course events.

ACC4110 In order to make strategic business decisions human resources professionals must have an understanding of management finance and accounting principles. Students experience an introduction to key accounting principles and terms and analyze financial statements. Students discover and explain how financial information is used in forecasting, budgeting, management and the measurement of business operations. ECO4110 It is essential to understand current labour economic issues when making human resources business decisions. Students examine the use of economic models for analysis of current labour trends and issues. Students explore the dimensions of labour supply and demand, wages, alternative work arrangements and government policies regarding labour issues. In addition students examine the impact of union objectives and union constraints. HRM4110 Organizational behaviour is used to understand how people and groups behave in the workplace. Organizational behaviour relates theories of history, psychology and sociology to workplace cultures and team dynamics. Students explore the areas of human communication, learning and motivation, ethics, creativity, leadership, power and conflict and change management. Knowledge of organizational behaviour guides human resources and business professionals as they build, grow and develop organizations within the ever changing business landscape. Organizational Behaviour Organizational behaviour is used to understand how people and groups behave in the workplace. Students examine theories and best practices in recruitment and selection, and their application to the human resources professional. By developing knowledge of how recruitment and selection links to organizational goals and strategies, students learn all aspects of the recruitment cycle; including job analysis, attracting and recruitment of candidates, the selection process and interview and decision making methodologies. The changing legal environment and the impact of legislation on the recruitment and selection process are important components. Recruitment and Selection Essential to an organization's success in meeting goals and remaining competitive is the ability to attract and select suitable employees. Students examine theories and best practices in recruitment and selection, and their application to the human resources professional. By developing knowledge of how recruitment and selection links to organizational goals and strategies, students learn all aspects of the recruitment cycle; including job analysis, attracting and recruitment of candidates, the selection process and interview and decision making methodologies. Students explore the fundamentals of Canadian legislation which relate to the workplace including a strong focus on working in Ontario. This legislation includes Employment Standards, Human Rights, Occupational Health and Safety, Pay Equity and Worker's Compensation. Students examine landmark cases and current legal issues which are undergoing interpretation by Canadian lawmakers. The legal framework is applied in developing policies and practices that impact organizations within the Canadian legal context. Students explore all areas of human resources management that are critical to providing progressive human capital strategies. After discussing the human capital strategies, students explore the role human resources plays in an organizational and strategic context and are introduced to the relevant legislative frameworks. Students explore and analyze human resources planning, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance assessment, compensation and benefits, and employee and labour relations. In addition, the concepts of occupational health and safety and international human resources management are also covered. Total rewards includes all elements of the compensation system including pay structures, benefits and other rewards. Students explore both theoretical and practical approaches and strategies to compensation design and management within an organizational framework. Students examine the external and internal environments of an organization, job evaluation, pay structures, benefits programs and changing employment conditions and trends.

Furthermore, students study the role of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, regulatory compliance, accident prevention, risk assessment and ethical and moral obligations that affect the wellbeing of employees.

    Additional Information

    Completion of Level 01 courses is a prerequisite to all Level 02 courses.
    In Level 02, those students who qualify (see qualification standards below), can choose between doing a 30-hour field placement (unpaid) or HRM4127 Human Resources Career Planning.

    In order to qualify for field placement, students must be registered full time in the program, and on cycle with a cumulative GPA of 3.0. All Level 01 courses must be complete and students must be registered and participating in all Level 02 courses.
